The following information is an overview of the Georgia ASCE Committees. The listing outlines the the purpose and responsibilities of each committee.

 

Audit Committee

Purpose: Coordinates the annual audit of the Section’s financial records.

Responsible Board Member: Past President

Responsibilities: Review financial records to determine if everything is properly recorded and maintained.

Membership Requirements: The committee is composed of member volunteers who are typically past officers but the Past President is the point of contact with the Board.

 

Awards Committee

Purpose: Seeks to recognize members and their projects for awards at the local and national level.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Related Sub-Committees or Representatives:

  • ARC Development of Excellence Award Interdisciplinary Jury Rep
  • Georgia Engineering Foundation Representative
  • Outstanding Section Sub-Committee

Responsibilities:

  • Determine potential candidates and projects for submission to the national ASCE for their OPAL awards.
  • Determine potential candidates and projects for recognition from the EWeek awards program.
  • Determine potential candidates and projects for recognition by the Section awards.
  • Assist candidates with submission applications.

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the Internal Director as the the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.

 

ARC Development of Excellence Award Interdisciplinary Jury Representative (Representative under Awards Committee)

Purpose: Serves on the Jury as an ASCE rep that evaluates the award submissions.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities: Attend Jury meetings.

Membership Requirements: Volunteer from general membership.

 

Georgia Engineering Foundation Representative (Representative under Awards Committee)

Purpose: Serves as the Section’s representative to the GEF committee that manages the money used to award scholarships.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend GEF committee meetings.
  • Communicate to the Section the status of applications for ASCE scholarships at GEF.

Membership Requirements: Volunteer from general membership.

 

Outstanding Section Sub-Committee (Sub-Committee under Awards Committee)

Purpose: Prepares the application for nomination of the Section for the Outstanding Section Award at the national level.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Collects necessary information on Section activities to be used on the application.
  • Become familiar with application requirements.
  • Ensure timely action for preparing the application prior to submission deadline.

Membership Requirements: Chair of the Subcommittee should be a member of the Awards Committee but the rest of the committee may be members at large.

 

Branch Committee

Purpose: Explores the establishment of new branches to cover other areas of the state.

Responsible Board Member: Vice President

Responsibilities: Reviews applications to determine if there is any overlap of service area with other branches; to determine if there are sufficient members signed up on the petition; and to determine if propose branch has a valid set of bylaws.

Membership Requirements: The committee is composed of member volunteers but the Vice President is the point of contact with the Board.

 

Continuing Education Committee

Purpose: Identifies existing continuing education opportunities and publicizes these to the Section. Also organizes continuing education opportunities to provide to the membership.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Related Sub-Committees or Representatives:

  • Georgia Engineers Summer Conference Representative
  • Round Table Employment Group

Responsibilities:

  • Review existing continuing education opportunities being offered by ASCE as well as non ASCE organizations and determine which ones may be best suited to our membership.
  • Publicize these opportunities to the membership using our communication tools.
  • Target some of these offerings to tap into membership in portions of the state not served by any Section or Branch meetings.

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the Internal Director as the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.

 

Georgia Engineers Summer Conference (Representative under Continuing Education Committee)

Purpose: Acts as ASCE representative to the Georgia Engineers Summer Conference planning committee.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend the planning committee meetings.
  • Communicate with the Section regarding their opportunities to participate in this conference as a presenter or participant.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership.

 

Round Table Employment Group (Group under Continuing Education Committee)

Purpose: Provides continuing education aimed at improved employment opportunities and creates a support network for those looking for jobs or change in jobs

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a monthly forum for members of the group to meet to discuss issues regarding employment.
  • Create opportunities for members to improve their skills.
  • Provide mechanisms to help members gain exposure with employers as represented by the Section’s membership.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership.

 

Finance Committee

Purpose: Reviews the Section’s distribution of monies as well as sources of income and recommend any changes that will enhance the financial wellbeing of the Section.

Responsible Board Member: Past President

Responsibilities:

  • Review investments to determine if they are providing the optimal balance between risk and return.
  • Review sources of income and make recommendations for changes to dues if necessary to meet Section goals.

Membership Requirements: The committee is composed of member volunteers who are typically past officers but the Past President is the point of contact with the Board.

 

History and Heritage Committee

Purpose: To record the history of the Section and Engineering in Georgia.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain Section news releases and articles.
  • Maintain brief biographies of Section Past Presidents.
  • Maintain a historical database of past Section award recipients.
  • Document Section activities and accomplishments.
  • Look for eligible national historic projects in GA.
  • Prepare for the Section’s centennial in 2012.
  • Maintain other activities that promote the history and heritage of the Section

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the Internal Director as the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.

 

Hospitality Committee

Purpose: To manage the check/registration at Section meetings.

Responsible Board Member: Younger Members Director

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare name tags and pdh forms for registrants obtained from Program Committee prior to meeting.
  • Staff the check in table to check in those who were preregistered so that it can be determined how many no shows we have (Cutoff time is 11:55AM)
  • Collect list of walk up registrants on a first come first served basis such that they can be seated once the number of no shows have been determined.

Membership Requirements: The committee is composed of member volunteers but the Younger Members Director is the point of contact with the Board.

Legislative Affairs/Key Contact Committee

Purpose: Seeks to represent the Section to State and Federal governmental entities.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Related Sub-Committees or Representatives:

  • Georgia Board of Registration Coalition Representative
  • GEA Legislative Coalition Representative
  • QBS Steering Committee Representative

Responsibilities:

  • Research existing and proposed local, State, and Federal laws that may affect Civil Engineers
  • Provide avenues to get members involved with their state and federal government representatives.
  • Keep the membership updated on legislative actions being debated at the State and Federal level that will affect the profession.
  • Prepare resolutions as authorized by the Board of Directors
  • Notify the membership when action is recommended regarding legislative actions being considered by State and Federal government.
  • In coordination with the Public Affairs Committee, develop Section policy statements for use in influencing public policies.
  • Seek to have members to serve on various governmental boards.

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the Internal Director as the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.

 

Georgia Board of Registration Representative (Representative of Legislative Affairs Committee)

Purpose: To coordinate the efforts of the member organizations in improving the performance of the licensure board.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Section’s representative to the Georgia Board of Registration Coalition.
  • Attend coalition meetings.
  • Report to the Section on progress and/or initiatives of the Coalition.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Georgia Engineers Alliance (GEA) Legislative Committee Representative (Representative of Legislative Affairs Committee)

Purpose: To coordinate the efforts of the member organizations in addressing legislative issues that affect the profession.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Section’s representative to the GEA Legislative Committee.
  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Report to the Section on progress and/or initiatives of the Committee.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Quality Based Selection (QBS) Steering Committee Representative (Representative of Legislative Affairs Committee)

Purpose: To promote the use of QBS in contract awards.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Section’s representative to the QBS Steering Committee
  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Report to the Section on progress and/or initiatives of the Coalition.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Membership Committee

Purpose: To focus on increasing membership in the Section and to recognize membership achievements.

Responsible Board Member: Vice President

Related Sub-Committees or Representatives:

  • Fellow Application Sub-Committee

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain Section’s access to national membership database.
  • Encourage more Georgia Engineers to not only join the national ASCE but to join the Section as well.
  • Identify and recognize the new Life members each year.
  • Identify candidates for possible Fellow level membership and forward them to the Fellow Application Sub-committee
  • Monitor progress of the Fellow Application Sub-Committee
  • In cooperation with the President, identify Section needs and recruit new volunteers to fill these positions/committees.

Membership Requirements: The Chair must be the Vice President but the rest are member volunteers.

 

Fellow Application Sub-Committee (Sub-Committee of Membership Committee)

Purpose: To increase the number of Georgia Section members who achieve Fellow membership status.

Responsible Board Member: Vice President

Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with application requirements.
  • In cooperation with the Membership Committee, identify potential candidates for Fellow status.
  • Assist Fellow applicants with locating Fellow references and providing advice on completion of application for forwarding to the national office.
  • In cooperation with the Program Committee, recognize successful candidates who are granted Fellow status at a Section meeting and on the website.

Membership Requirements: The committee is composed of member volunteers but the Vice President is point of contact with the Board and the Membership Committee.

 

Nominating Committee

Purpose: Prepares the proposed slate of officers for the next fiscal year to serve the Section.

Responsible Board Member: Past President

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews a number of potential volunteers who are or have been active in the various activities of the Section and evaluates their strengths to determine where they may best serve the Section in the coming year.
  • Provides a list of proposed candidates to the Board for approval prior to the election cycle.

Membership Requirements: The committee is composed of the three most recent active Past Presidents and a number of at large members appointed by the current President. The Immediate Past President is Chair and the point of contact with the Board.

Program Committee

Responsible Board Member: President Elect

Purpose: To plan and coordinate the monthly and annual Section meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • To procure speakers and topics for each meeting.
  • To coordinate with other engineering organizations for joint meetings.
  • To issue email meeting announcements.
  • To monitor attendance registration numbers for coordination with hotel.
  • Notify Treasurer of guarantee number of guest with hotel.
  • Send final attendance registration to the Hospitality Committee.
  • Update Section Calendar on the website. Procedure can be found in Tab 6, Procedure No. 4.

Membership Requirements: The Chair must be the President-Elect but the rest are member volunteers.

Public Relations Committee

Purpose: Leads our efforts to not only create ASCE positions statements on pertinent public policy issues but also is responsible for getting the message to appropriate news outlets

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Related Sub-Committees or Representatives:

  • The Georgia Engineer Magazine Representative
  • Georgia Geospatial Advisory Council Representative
  • Infrastructure Champion
  • Public Affairs Grant Sub-Committee
  • Report Card Sub-Committee

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor local news sources to determine whether there are any current issues that the engineering community should be offering opinions/solutions to.
  • Prepare “white papers” that outline the Section’s opinion or viewpoint on issues selected by the committee.
  • Prepare articles emphasizing Civil Engineering contributions

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the External Director as the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.

 

The Georgia Engineer Magazine Representative (Representative of Public Relations Committee)

Purpose: To participate on the editorial board that develops each issue.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend editorial meetings every 2 months
  • Write or collect articles for the magazine.
  • Review and submit the Presidents’s message in each issue.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Georgia Geospatial Advisory Council Representative (Representative of Public Relations Committee)

Purpose: To participate on the Council of interested parties that are examining the use of geospatial tools in Georgia governments.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Council meetings as needed.
  • Prepare summary of meeting for distribution to Board.
  • Make recommendations to Board of possible actions regarding impacts of Council activities on the profession.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Infrastructure Champion (Representative of Public Relations Committee)

Purpose: To develop a person familiar with issues around our bridges and roadwas..

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate local activities with national programs
  • Participate in the Report Card efforts.
  • Help to develop White Papers and other communications from the Section .

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Public Affairs Grant Sub-Committee (Sub-Committee of Public Relations Committee)

Purpose: To participate on the editorial board that develops each issue.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Identify initiatives and projects that may qualify for the grants from national
  • Prepare grant submission packages to national for funding.
  • Prepare end of year report to national regarding the use of the funding.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Report Card Sub-Committee (Sub-Committee of Public Relations Committee)

Purpose: To participate on the editorial board that develops each issue.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the planning for the new report card
  • Recruit experts to help prepare the various sections of the report card.
  • Compile all of the data and reports from the experts and develop the report..

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Student Affairs Committee

Purpose: Implements programs that will reach out to college, high school and middle school students encouraging them to consider Engineering as a profession.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Establish student chapters at engineering colleges in Georgia
  • Establish long term relationships with college chapters to help support their programs through the filling of Practitioner Advisors positions.
  • Seek out relationships with industry/academic entities.
  • Participate in various outreach programs that target high school and middle school students, such as Explore Engineering Academy and Introduce a Girl to Engineering.
  • Support E-Week programs such as the toothpick bridge contest and mathcounts each year.

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the Internal Director as the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.

 

E-Week Representative (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Serves as the Section’s representative to the E Week committee that plans for E Week activities.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend E-Week committee meetings.
  • Communicate to the Section proposed E-Week activities.
  • Solicit volunteers to help with the various E-Week activities.

Membership Requirements: Volunteer from general membership.

 

Educational Outreach Sub Committee (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Explore and implement programs that will expose pre-college students to the engineering profession.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with local school systems to establish a visiting practitioner program.
  • Participate in the national Curious George program.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Explore Engineering Academy Representative (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Represents the Section on the EEA Committee to help prepare the Civil Engineer program at the Academy

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Design and organize the Civil Engineering program.
  • Recruit student attendees from our membership.
  • Administer our scholarship program

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership.

 

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Representative (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Represents the Section on the committee that facilitates the Introduce a Girl to Engineering event during E-Week.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Recruit volunteers to help with event.
  • Participate in event activities.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Math Counts Representative (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Participates in the planning and staging of the Math Counts Bridge during E-Week.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Recruit volunteers to help with event.
  • Participate in event activities.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Practitioner Advisor (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Provide long term relationship with engineering college student chapters.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the recruitment of practitioner speakers for chapter meetings.
  • Coordinate and help with chapter activities
  • Assist the student leadership during transition periods to ensure national requirements are met.
  • Partner with the Faculty Advisor.
  • Communicate with Section leadership about needs of the student chapter to support their events.

Skills USA/Career Expo Representative (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Participates in the planning and staging of the Ga. Section Booth at the Skills USA/Career Expo.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Register the Section for the event.
  • Recruit volunteers to help with event.
  • Gather promotional material to advertise ASCE.
  • Set up the booth at the expo.
  • Participate in the expo.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Toothpick Bridge Representative (Representative under Student Affairs Committee)

Purpose: Participates in the planning and staging of the Toothpick Bridge event during E-Week.

Responsible Board Member: Internal Director

Responsibilities:

  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Recruit volunteers to help with event.
  • Participate in event activities.

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership

 

Younger Member Group

Purpose: To provide a forum for younger members to network.

Responsible Board Member – Younger Member Director

Membership Requirements: Volunteers from general membership 35 years old or younger.

 

Website Committee

Purpose: To establish and maintain the Section’s website so that it provides information to the membership on the organization of the Section and the activities of the Section.

Responsible Board Member: External Director

Responsibilities:

  • Establish guidelines for the format of additions to the website.
  • Recommend changes and/or additions to the website.
  • Prepare a development plan for the website to meet the needs of the Section.
  • Ensure content is consistent with the policies of the Board of Directors

Membership Requirements: The committee is under the responsibility of the External Director as the point of contact with the Board but the chair and the membership of the committee may be from at large volunteers.
